An Academic and an Entrepreneur
Dr. Bush earned her doctoral degree in English from Arizona State University and taught writing and literature courses for over 20 years in university class rooms. For 10 of those years, she also developed curriculum and facilitated workshops and conferences to train other faculty members to teach more effectively in person and online.
Early in her academic career she discovered the literary value of memoir and autobiography. Specializing in western American women’s autobiography, she published a ground-breaking book of literary research in Mormon women’s autobiographies: Faithful Transgressions in the American West: Six Twentieth-Century Mormon Women’s Autobiographical Acts (Utah State University Press, 2004). She has also published numerous articles in scholarly and non-scholarly publications, an award-winning short story, and many blogs.
Seeking new challenges, Dr. Bush resigned from the university in 2012 to become an entrepreneur by starting a book writing business, which now offers publishing services.
Growing Up Outdoors
Dr. Bush’s early exposure to spectacular scenery and free roaming moose, elk, and bison in and around Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks taught her to love wildlife and care about the environment. She attended Teton Science School, participated in girls’ camp for four years, and became a girls’ camp leader herself after graduating from high school. No matter how sophisticated her tastes in food, film, books, and culture have become, she still considers herself a small-town girl from Wyoming.
At Arizona State University’s Center for Learning and Teaching Excellence, Dr. Bush directed Wakonse, Arizona, held at ASU’s Camp Tontozona. Wakonse is an annual 3-day retreat about teaching for 60-75 cross-disciplinary faculty members from Arizona State University, University of Arizona, Northern Arizona University, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and several local community colleges. Dr. Bush uses her experience running large-group retreats at the university to organize her own “Write Your Book in a Barn” retreats.
Having lived in Arizona for over 20 years, Dr. Bush now conducts business from Phoenix in the winter and Jackson Hole in the summer. She serves clients from Oregon to Hawaii to Massachusetts, and from Canada to Australia to Europe. Distance is no barrier.
Dr. Bush believes in the value of community service and volunteering. She currently serves on the Corporate Partners Committee for the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) and as President of her homeowner’s association. She has also volunteered for many other organizations over life, including Special Olympics, the Sunstone Foundation, Project for the End of Rape International, Herberger Theater Center, Landmark Education (now Landmark Worldwide), National Bank of Arizona, the Black Chamber of Arizona, and 14 years as a Big Sister in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona.
Honoring Her Mother’s Success
As founder and CEO of her own company, Dr. Bush views her transition from being an academic at the university to an entrepreneur in business as a loving tribute to her entrepreneurial mother, Clara Bush (pictured left). Clara’s unwavering commitment to her own customers and employees at the Gai-Mode Beauty Salon for over 50 years enabled her to grow her business in Jackson Hole, Wyoming into a thriving success.
